He studied the law at Ebril and Kirkuk but a persecution due to his political activities forbid him to be graduated. He joined Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP) at the age of 14 and took an active part in fighting against the Iraqi central government. In 1975, he left KDP led by Mustafa Barzani and founded Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. After the fall of Saddam's regime, Talabani has been appointed member of IGC. He is Iraq president since April 2005.
