explanation: The first English-language newspaper in Japan, founded by Japanese publishers in 1897. It began with a support of the famous persons such as Ito Hirobumi and Fukuzawa Yukichi and received founds of Japanese government and business circle to diffuse Japanese opinion over the world. In 1943, its name changed to "The Nippon Times" but reverted to the initial name in 1956 and receives no more government funds. Its circulation is about 65,000.
